This is a one time security update of Windows Media Player that must be run in order to play Overdrive audiobooks. If not done, people get the 'Unable to acquire license' error message.
If method above, updating from Windows Media Player, doesn't work you can download the upgrade directly from the Internet. (This update is different from the Windows Media Player upgrade, which only upgrades the version of your player--media Player 10 to Media Player 11, for instance--this upgrade does not install the security feature we're talking about.)
To manually install the Security Upgrade, go to this website using Internet Explorer (not any other browser):
and click the 'Upgrade' button at the center of the screen. Please note that you must use Internet Explorer when you do this. The button will be disabled if you are not using Explorer (presumably because it's a Microsoft website).
Please note: You often have to refer people with Windows 7 to the manual install method.
I ran the security upgrade, and it still doesn't work!
(From OverDrive tech support 6/20/12)
We believe this issue can be resolved by following the steps outlined at the Microsoft support link below. This process involves using the 'ResetDRM' tool to reset the DRM for Windows Media Player.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976590
Once you have performed the steps above, you can verify the upgrade is complete by opening OverDrive Media Console and going to 'Help > About OverDrive Media Console'. The version of DRM listed should be 2.9.0.1.
